Tips for choosing a grind setting…

Why the fuss over grind settings?

While grinding your beans fresh using a burr-grinder will always give you superior flavour in your brew, and give you the power to adjust your grind settings for your different coffees and brewers, the battle for countertop space can steer people towards buying pre-ground.

As there are a growing infinity of brewing devices shapes and sizes, filter types and espresso machine designs out there, it is difficult to get the pre-ground setting exactly spot on every time - but this guide should get us most of the way there!

If you are in any doubt about what setting you have chosen, we recommend typing in the make and model of your brewing device in the “Note / Additional Info / Grind Setting” box at checkout. This will help us grind the coffee at an appropriate size for your brewer.

Pourover / Filter

Our “Small drip filter” grind setting is suitable for a 3-4 minute brew time with brewers like a V60 01/02, Kalita Wave, Chemex sizes 1 and 3, Clever Dripper or similar.

“Large drip filter” will fit the bill for a Chemex size 6, 8 or 10, or a standard domestic electric filter brewer.

Home Espresso

Our “Home espresso machine” grind setting is suitable for simple home espresso machines such as Delonghi, Smeg, or Bosch. These machine manufacturers assume you will be using coarse, pre-ground coffee, and have “pressurised baskets” and high pressure water to make up for this assumption. As a result of this, we need to use a reasonably coarse grind setting so that the machine doesn’t get blocked up when brewing.

Aeropress

The Aeropress is a wonderfully versatile brewing gizmo, but for pre-ground, we have a setting that is sure to give you a nice balanced brew. Our “Aeropress” setting will work well with a 2m 30s brew time, and 20-30s plunge time.
